In India there a few medical institutions established to provide access and services to the poor. How do the poor access health and medical services they need? Who looks after them? Tens of thousands of poor individuals living in the villages throughout the Vellore District in Tamil Nadu, India had minimal access health and medical care. It is difficult for these individuals to break out of the cycle of poverty if they do not have good health.
Sri Narayani Hospital and Research Centre is located in the village of Thirumailikodi, located in the Vellore District at a cost of over $2.3 million. It serves the communities of the Vellore District and provides care to all, independent of ability to pay or religious beliefs. Sri Narayani Hospital and Research Centre provides the highest quality care in its outpatient medical and dental camps conducted in villages and schools and with inpatient services such as birthing services, heart bypass surgery, dialysis, kidney transplant, lung operations, brain and eye surgery. The hospital emphasizes the importance of serving those in need who come to the hospital for care by providing some subsidy to all – from a minimal discount to free care depending upon one’s ability to pay.
Since it official opening on June 22, 2004, the Hospital has establish a reputation of providing high quality care to all the people it serves. In December 2006 the Hospital received the “Best Hospital of 2006” award from the Vellore Rotary Club its service to the people of the Vellore District.
